CAREvent® DRA
Automatic Handheld Mine Rescue Resuscitator
The rescue of a trapped miner underground has presented new challenges over the last few years. The CAREvent® DRA Automatic Rescue Resuscitator has been developed to meet these challenges complying with the latest ERC and AHA Guidelines 2005 for Resuscitation. The CAREvent® DRA has "only one external control". The underground mining environment is considered to be so hazardous that the less the rescuer has to do to ventilate and transport the patient, the quicker the patient can be resuscitated and the greater chance for the patient's survival. All the rescuer has to do is secure the patient's airway, turn on the oxygen or air supply and apply the full face mask to the patient's face.
The CAREvent® DRA will provide automatic ventilation to the non-breathing patient at a rate and volume designed to reduce the risk of gastric insufflation. Should the patient start spontaneous breathing, the "Demand Breathing" feature of the CAREvent® DRA allows the patient to breath on his or her own.
During CPR, a Manual Override Button is provided to allow for the provisions of 2 breaths followed by 30 compressions. During spontaneous breathing, the patient's inspiratory effort (if adequate) will also cause the "Automatic Circuit Shut Off" to stop the automatic cycling of the resuscitator allowing the patient to breathe at his or her own rate and volume. If the patient stops breathing again, the automatic cycling will restart automatically with no action required on the part of the rescuer.
By combining "simplicity of operation" with technological sophistication, the CAREvent® (DRA) provides trained individuals with a safe and effective CAREvent® (DRA) means of maintaining artificial ventilation during respiratory arrest that may occur during mining operations.

CAREvent® PAR
Public Access Resuscitator
In the event of a cardiac arrest, rescuers may be unwilling to perform CPR because of panic, fear of doing harm, or fear of cross contamination by performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
The CAREvent® PAR - "Public Access Resuscitator" has been specifically designed to eliminate these concerns, "Bridging the gap between FEAR and EFFICACY in CPR". The CAREvent® PAR assists the rescuer in providing "efficient and effective CPR" by providing them with audible and visual prompts for chest compressions, ventilation timing and automatic ventilations.
The visual prompts aid the rescuer in their CPR efforts by providing illuminated pictograms of the CPR process timed with the audible voice prompts. These voice and visual prompts help to significantly reduce interruptions in chest compressions.
The CAREvent® PAR provides high-quality automatic ventilations with 100% oxygen, in a safe and effective manner, consistent with the current resuscitation guidelines. Since breaths are provided in line with the resuscitation guidelines, an M4 cylinder with a capacity of 113 Liters of oxygen will provide ~ 30 minutes of resuscitation time.
The controlled flowrate (and subsequent low airway pressures) removes the risks to the patient commonly associated with mouth-to-mouth or bag-mask ventilation of putting air into the stomach and restricting the flow of blood back to the heart.
The audible and visual warning of mask leakage or airway obstruction assists the rescuer in ensuring that adequate tidal volumes are delivered. This is achieved by instructing the rescuer on head tilt and sealing of the mask to the face. Compression time is not sacrificed if the rescuer is unable to get a perfect mask-to-face seal or head tilt, because the design of the device allows for a 40% mask leak and a peak airway pressure of 45 cm H2O before the alarm activates.
Designed to provide the links in the "Chain of Survival" not provided by any other device, the CAREvent® PAR is an invaluable adjunct to the skill and training of both lay, and emergency rescuers during CPR.
